Summary

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Suzanne Rindell’s The Other Typist. Read by the actress Gretchen Mol, who plays Gillian Darmody in the hit US series Boardwalk Empire.

New York City, 1924: the height of Prohibition and the whole city swims in bathtub gin. Rose Baker is an orphaned young woman working as a typist in a police precinct on the lower East Side.

Every day Rose transcribes the confessions of gangsters and murderers - and while she may disapprove of the details, she prides herself on typing up the goriest of crimes without batting an eyelid. But when the captivating Odalie begins at the precinct, Rose finds herself falling under the new typist’s spell.

As the two girls friendship blossoms, it is not long before Rose’s fascination for her new colleague turns to obsession. But just who is the real Odalie, and how far will Rose go to find out?

Long winded

Set in 1920s America during a time when alcohol was illegal and speakeasy's reined supreme, the book relates the unlikely friendship between two women who are typist's within the same American police precinct. It was very promising and I stuck with this book right to the end and although it never quite reached expectations, I was rewarded by a twist at the end. However, I did find the story over long although it set the scene and the characters of the two (?) main players well. It may have been me but I found the story a little complicated and I'm still unclear as to what actually happened in the end. No spoilers here though. The performance was really good by Gretchen Mol in a beautiful American accent that was lyrical and easy on the ear.

Single White Female

The Talented Mrs Ripley meets The Untouchables as a plain Jane typist makes friends with the seemingly out-of-her-league friends-wise colleague.

Preposterous

We’ll read by Gretchen Moll but a truly preposterous plot. I’d listen to her reading other books but avoid anything else by the author.

An unusual story.

Where does The Other Typist rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book had an interesting setting, a police station in the prohibition era. A young lady is sucked in by a colleague and as we travel through their relationship we have no idea how it will end. Little hints are given, but the finale is very well done.
