RAW, SPECTACULAR & ENTHRALLING!

Finally a gripping, fast paced, deep and believable story in this genre. The Remaining is unforgettable and has made such an impression on me I’m so excited I came across it. Entertainment at its best I’ve lost myself in this epic feast and the blurry eyes mornings were totally worth it! Be warned if you pick it up you won’t be able to stop! DJ Molles THANKYOU

Non stop super exciting

It kept me up at night because it was so thrilling.

People in other reviews said there are inconsistencies. I probably just flossed over those, haven't thought of any that mattered.

I've read a lot of apocalypse stories, and this one is up there with the best actually.

It may not be the most realistic premise for a story. The army thing is hilarious, the plague is so weird it's kind of cool. But those things are not really important. What is, is the ambiance of the story. And that's where this book excels and makes me happy.

The characters are real in a way that I love. They fear and fret and make jokes and have bad dreams. They are annoyed with each other and try to make things work.

Thanks to that I really care what happens.

This was a great read, I'm going to move on with the next one right now.

Where does The Remaining rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

These books are ok, if i was busy and had little time spare i would not get but had 2 weeks with time to fill travelling all over the place so got through all 4 books

It is a zombie twist book which is enjoyable, plots twists are a bit flat and disappointing really, for such a super solider he is a bit dim at times but it is humanity i suppose but really for such a job he has he is always lacking control..... but overall i enjoyed the book even if a bit weaker than other zombie books

Great start to a series.

Another great narration from Christian Rummel…he really adds a depth to the story. Excellent story that got me from the start…..strange listening to plague type novels post Covid and realising how these things could so easily become true!!….sleep tight people.

A must read for any zombie/apocalypse enthusiast

I was recommended this book by a family member, the story, characters and events are all brilliantly written and everything that happenes is believable and tense. I even caught myself holding my breath at some points

would recommend to everyone that loves this genre of books

Not bad, but nothing overly special

As far as post-apocalyptic virus/zombie-style books go, this is a good, fun example but I felt it was missing a few things to make it overly solid.

The way the whole thing was built up was a very believable, plausible way of how something like this might happen and how certain responses might be taken. It felt like it was built from the ground up incredibly well, it just had a few issues character-wise for me.

The main character, Cpt Lee Harden, spends a good deal of time telling you he's in the military and how important rules, regulations and following orders are. Which is why I instantly felt disconnected from him when he immediately starts going against the orders he was given because he got impatient. He was supposedly picked for the duty he was given for his skills/composure/level-headedness etc ... but instantly decided that such things as obeying the chain of command was something that happened to other people. In fact, every part of the book with him in it happened because he didn't follow orders. Sure, it would have happened if he had, so there seemed no reason for the author to make him go against everything his military training would have drilled him into him. Could have just let the allotted time elapse rather than convincing himself that he wasn't being all rule-breaky.

The characters he meets also don't feel like they have any appreciation of what's going on beyond how it's affecting them. I'd get that if, like Lee, they had JUST been subjected to it. But they'd been living in the conditions for longer than he had. So the whole feeling of constant shock rather than getting on with what as happening just didn't feel wholly real to me.

The pacing of the novel is good. It never goes too fast or too slow. The parts in-between action sequences are filled with interesting titbits on what's going on and how survival might be achieved. The characters he meets, if you put aside my slight negative about them in the previous paragraph aren't bad, but I feel the group as a whole is too open to danger. It would work well in a tv setting, but in book form where the action is seen through Lee's POV alone, it just doesn't hit the sweet spot for me.

The descriptions of the action are pretty damn good. Very vivid, engaging and they really keep you invested in what's going on then and there. Sadly, just as I was getting invested, it ended somewhat out of nowhere. It felt like a door had been slammed in my face rather than a gradual end that was led up to. I know that there are several more books in this series, but felt the ending just could have been a bit more of a smooth transition rather than the 'that's it' that we got.

This has been given rave reviews that make mine seem like somewhat of a minority, so chances are those of you reading this review may read this book and be blown away by it. I just wasn't one of those people. Whether it's the book, or just that I have read so many other books in this genre and The Remaining just can't quite reach the heights of their greatness, I can't say. All I can say is that it felt like a good effort, but nothing to knock my socks off.

Cliffhanger alert

Would you try another book written by D. J. Molles or narrated by Christian Rummel?

I will probably get the next book and read it. Wasn't happy with where/how it ended and would like to see what happens next. Found it very hard to settle into the narration - it was jerky, over dramatic and irritating.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would have actually had an ending, so that it could be a stand alone novel and people could have a choice about reading the next book, rather than feeling that they paid for a whole book but only got half a book. Feel pressed into reading the next book.

Would you be willing to try another one of Christian Rummel’s performances?

Absolutely not.

Was The Remaining worth the listening time?

Because of the irritating narration, and the frustrating "ending" I'm actually not sure. I finished the book feeling irritated and cheated.
