Summary

Abigail Foster fears she will end up a spinster, especially as she has little dowry to improve her charms and the one man she thought might marry her - a longtime friend - has fallen for her younger, prettier sister. When financial problems force her family to sell their London home, a strange solicitor arrives with an astounding offer: the use of a distant manor house abandoned for 18 years. The Fosters journey to imposing Pembrooke Park and are startled to find it entombed as it was abruptly left: tea cups encrusted with dry tea, moth-eaten clothes in wardrobes, a doll's house left mid-play... The handsome local curate welcomes them, but though he and his family seem to know something about the manor's past, the only information they offer Abigail is a warning: Beware trespassers who may be drawn by rumors that Pembrooke contains a secret room filled with treasure. Hoping to improve her family's financial situation, Abigail surreptitiously searches for the hidden room, but the arrival of anonymous letters addressed to her, with clues about the room and the past, bring discoveries even more startling. As secrets come to light, will Abigail find the treasure and love she seeks.... or very real danger?

Bit of editing would help

Good story and interesting characters. Got a bit too religious for me - increasing mentions especially in the last quarter. Found myself wishing it would hurry up in places - some cutting would be beneficial. Narration was very good.

Romantic thriller .

Such a brilliant plot with twist and turns. I normally guess the plot, this time I didn’t. I enjoyed it from start to finish.

Interesting plot - a good mysterious period drama.,

I wasn’t sure at first as thought it might be a bit slow pace for me, but it then had me hooked with the mystery within the story (not giving anything away)

Excellent!!

Great adventure paired with romance in a style after that of Jane Austen. Beautifully written and beautifully narrated

Thoughts

I was surprised by this book. The story was far more complicated than I thought it would be. After one twist there was another turn in the themes which kept my attention throughout. A good listen. A good piece of escapism which was what I was seeking!

Risible

I could not continue listening as the anachronisms and americanisms became worse and worse. If you are writing a story set in early 19th century England do try harder to make it credible. No one in Regency England ever went 'round back', though they may have gone to the back of the house. No well born lady ever stood sipping tea on the back stoop, and there was no such thing as a back stoop anyway. No one ever used the term 'gotten', no genteel lady in the manor house ever received a welcome basket containing a mound of muffins from a local working class family, nor told the parson that they did not often attend church, church attendance was of enormous social importance. The plot may have been mildly enjoyable but I kept shouting 'ludicrous' at the absent author.
