Dennis E. Taylor, author of the best-selling Bobiverse trilogy, explores a whole different, darker world in this sci-fi stand-alone. Determined to give his wife and children a better life back home, Ivan Pritchard ventures to the edge of known space to join the crew of the Mad Astra as an asteroid miner. He's prepared for hard work and loneliness—but not the unthinkable. After coming into contact with a mysterious alien substance, Pritchard finds an unwelcome entity sharing his mind, and a disturbing physical transformation taking place. With his very humanity at stake, Pritchard must save mankind from a full-scale interstellar war.

Critic reviews

“Dennis Taylor serves up a top-notch outer-space adventure…. Ray Porter’s narration is simply brilliant…. In addition to suspense, action, futuristic detail, and moments of comedy, the book brings a light, investigative touch to the question of what exactly human identity is.” (The Washington Post)

A trap worth falling into!

Having listened to the bobiverse books I thought I'd give this a go.

Brilliant!! Lots of interesting concepts which are highly relevant to roday's world. Great storyline which is really brought to life by excellent narration. Been awhile since I reviewed a book... but had to for this one... you have to get it! Fantastic listen... think there'll be a lot more 5 starr rathings!

Good story with a great use of sound.

A good story that had me involved to the end. The sound was very good with realistic effects for radio, intercom, phone and computer.

not my normal listen but loved every minute

I'm not a huge sci-fi book fan and normal listen to non fiction on Audible but I have to say this although at bit out of my wheelhouse was actually a very enjoyable book that I would recommend to everyone.

builds to a thrilling finish

slow start sets out the bleak future we are all heading for and builds to a great sc fi ending. caractors are introduced and built into a cohesive group moving to a frightening end play with the fate of the human race in the balance. nicely voiced with a dark humour that keeps the listener glued to the unfolding story.

fun space romp

Use of voice effect and accents really bring the book to life. Tethered to an engaging storyline similar in outlook to the bobiverse books (but with a darker twist). I endorese this.

Another excellent sci-fi by Dennis E Taylor

I really loved this story. A good mix of sci-fi set up with plausible follow through, the characters are realistic and narrated voices excellent.
