Absolute Escapism...
I think I can now count Colm Toibin as my favourite writer. This one, The South, made me think about myself in lots of ways. Life choices/decisions etc. And my opinion of the main Character went up, down, up down. I will say no more, other than I highly recommend. Also ... the narrator Aoife McMahon was fabulous. Cannot recommend enough for anyone with Irish heritage/interest. Particularly for those of an artistic nature.

Thought provoking
I agree with the other review. It was sheer escapism. What I really loved to hear about was the Barcelona and mountain villages of the 1950's. Also of Ireland in the 1950's
I also thought of my own life choices and wonder if I'd have done the same.
The history of the Civil War and the storied behind the characters.
Like the other review my opinion of the main character was slightly ambivalent.
Great narration.
