Summary

Alec Leamas has ended his time in Berlin. Or his time has ended him. The last of his Eastern agents has been killed, like the others, by the Abteilung. Back at the Circus, Leamas is put on the shelf. He turns to drunkenness and dishonesty and finally disappears from view, a seemingly broken man.

But unknown to anyone except George Smiley and his master, Control, Leamas has been given his toughest mission ever. He will have to be himself but more so. He will have to fight off the inevitable softening of middle age and wait a little more before he can come in from the cold. Not even Leamas can know the plan of which he is the instrument.

Cold, so Cold.

A good performance, presenting a great story. Shorter than most Le Carre Novels, a good first read of this author before committing to a longer one.

a powerful and moving tale of espionage

Very well read and clear to follow all the strands, in fact easier to follow as an audio book than by reading. superb

I'm not a spy fan but...

I really enjoyed it. Really great twists and very entertaining. The second half ramps up the story so if, like me, you may not necessarily be a fan of the genre, the story has changed my view. Well delivered too

The Perfect Spy Novel

Though short by le Carré's standards, this is perhaps his most impressive work.

The story is brilliantly composed, and the outcome excellently developed, yet unpredictable. The historical elements are well-researched, making the whole tale more believable, and the plot is engaging and progressed with perfect poise.

The narration is exactly what was required to bring the story to life. Jayston's voice is authoritative and well-suited to the genre, and the way he portrays each character is on brand and matches expectations.

One of my favourite Le Carre novels. Excellent. Cant praise Micheal Jayston enough. His narrating is second to none. Highly recommend

Superior Spy Thriller

This was a gripping, realistic story of morally ambiguous Cold War espionage. Expertly read by Jayston, slipping subtly between distinct characters with ease.

Another Gripping Spy Story

le Carre delivers another gripping tale of the cold war British spy network. Lots of twists and turns to keep the listener guessing until the very end. Up there with the rest of his works.

The narrator delivers the story brilliantly, although in previous purchases where Le Carre has read them himself does take a lot of beating.

In from the Cold

I think that this is one of le Carré’s best works. It’s short, it’s visceral, it’s to the point, and has e shadow of the Wall hanging over it the entire time. If ever there were an angrier work about the idiocy of the Cold War I’ve yet to read it. It’s a brilliant work, full of tense language, scenes that make us sometimes laugh, sometimes makes you tense your body, not knowing what’s going to happen. And in the end you just cry. A wonderful work and well deserves its fame

Secrets, subterfuge and betrayal

I’ve known about John le Carre for ages and have finally been able to listen to this. The story completely measures up to expectations and feels authentically cruel and “Cold War“. Whether one comes to grips with the characters is in a sense the paradox of the novel itself of secrets, subterfuge and betrayal.
Genuinely narrated and absolutely recommended.
