Summary

The Story of a Soul (l'Histoire d'une Âme) is the autobiography of Thérèse of Lisieux. It was first published on September 30, 1898, a year to the day after her death from tuberculosis at the age of 24, on September 30, 1897. The book was a single volume formed from three distinct manuscripts - manuscripts of different length, written at different times, addressed to different people, and differing from one another in character. The work of unifying these disparate manuscripts was carried out by Pauline, the sister of Thérèse. It was initially published with a limited audience in mind, the Carmelite convents and certain religious personalities, and just 2000 copies of the 475-page book were printed. It quickly became a publishing phenomenon, however, and Sister Thérèse of the Child Jesus was canonised in 1925. St. Dismas Catholic Classic editions are all new translations.

Wading through treacle!

It’s difficult enough to stay with this kind of spirituality - and it’s well worth it- but the reading is so overdone with piety thatI would have given up on what is, in fact, quite a unique document of the life of devotion: if I hadn’t already read the brief but superb intro by Thomas Keating I might have been tempted to dump the book because of the reading: Iwill be avoiding anything read by her in future.

Ruined by an awful narration!

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

This is a Christian literary and teaching classic which I would recommend to anybody.
I have it in both paper and kindle versions and as I often use WhysperSync these days I decided to invest in the audio version. What a mistake! I don't want to be unkind but it is impossible to listen to this - the drawl and the blandness; it sounds inane. I can't help but wonder who thought this narration was good enough to release.
I'd recommend waiting until a better performance is released.

Would you recommend The Story of a Soul: The Autobiography of St. Therese of Lisieux to your friends? Why or why not?

Highly recommended but get it in text form.

Would you be willing to try another one of Melissa Silvestro’s performances?

Never.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Very disappointed.

Any additional comments?

Can we have a new version with competent narrator please.
