Summary
Edinburgh, 1847. City of Medicine, Money, Murder.
Young women are being discovered dead across the Old Town, all having suffered similarly gruesome ends. In the New Town, medical student Will Raven is about to start his apprenticeship with the brilliant and renowned Dr Simpson.
Simpson's patients range from the richest to the poorest of this divided city. His house is like no other, full of visiting luminaries and daring experiments in the new medical frontier of anaesthesia. It is here that Raven meets housemaid Sarah Fisher, who recognises trouble when she sees it and takes an immediate dislike to him. She has all of his intelligence but none of his privileges, in particular his medical education.
With each having their own motive to look deeper into these deaths, Raven and Sarah find themselves propelled headlong into the darkest shadows of Edinburgh's underworld, where they will have to overcome their differences if they are to make it out alive.

A Victorian thriller!
I thought it very intriguing and it gave an insight into the Victorian era of medicine and in particular obstetrics. I liked the use of 2 narrators for the 2 protagonists, especially considering the role and view of women of that time.

Brilliant book !
Loved it. Beautifully written. Lots of twists and turns- thoroughly enjoyed it! Looking forward to more books by Ambrose Party.

Fantastic Read
I have a feeling this unlikely pair is going to go far. Great well developed characters, great period, great setting! Also learned about Simpson.

Shockingly educative thriller
Fast paced and highly recommended story with utterly new historical detail to me. Surprised and delighted to find Inspector McLevy has a role to play. I sped easily through this audiobook and aim to acquire the rest of the series. My rating for the two performances represents 3 for BD and 1 for LB. I would have preferred BD to have tackled the entirety; he is sufficiently talented and a pleasure to listen to.

A gripping tale
The author sets the scene in 19th century Edinburgh. The rich, the poor and those that feed off both. Reading the news one wonders if times have changed.

1st ever audio book
My first audio book and I really enjoyed it.
Chris and Marissa signed a copy for me at 2019s 'Bloody Scotland' so I was loathe to read it and this was a great alternative. Readers voices were excellent. 5*

Thoroughly enjoyable romp slash feminist treatise
Rather like a an iron fist in a velvet glove this tale of a young apprentice obstetrician paints a vivid picture of the grim inequalities of 19th century Edinburgh with gore and good humour. The story was compelling enough, although I would have liked a little more in the way of character development, particularly of the relationship between the 2 lead characters which felt a little rushed and anticlimactic. That said, I will definitely be returning to the series as I throughly enjoyed my time in fog swathed Victorian Edinburgh and I definitely want to know more about Dr Simpson and his household.
The narration was particularly strong. Bryan Dick brought this story to life with aplomb, a perfect match. Louise Brearley is a competent narrator, if a little flat. Also, I think a native accent may have been more authentic. It didn’t overly detract from the story though. Go on try it!
