Summary

In South Carolina, a young black man faces the death penalty for the rape and murder of Marianne Larousse, daughter of one of the wealthiest men in the state. It's a case that nobody wants to touch, a case with its roots in old evil, and old evil is private detective Charlie Parker's speciality. But Parker is about to make a descent into the abyss, a confrontation with dark forces that threaten all that Parker holds dear: his lover, his unborn child, even his soul. . .

For in a prison cell, a fanatical preacher is about to take his revenge on Charlie Parker, its instruments the very men that Parker is hunting, and a strange, hunched creature that keeps its own secrets buried by a riverbank: the undiscovered killer Cyrus Nairn. Soon, all of these figures will face a final reckoning in southern swamps and northern forests, in distant locations linked by a single thread, a place where the paths of the living and the dead converge. A place known only as the White Road.

sorry Paul Birchard, bring back Jeff Harding

Would you consider the audio edition of The White Road to be better than the print version?

no, not even slightly better, and I love the John Connolly tales on audio

What did you like best about this story?

it's yet another excellent John Connolly, and a great story about Louis' background, but I only know that because I've read the print version

How could the performance have been better?

Something about Paul Birchard's voice just didn't sit with me, I'm pleased he only narrated one of the Charlie Parker books!

Any additional comments?

I'll keep the book just so I have the full set, but I really can't listen to the narrator, he's stopped me listening to the books until I re-read the print version!

Dissapointed with Narrating

Another great Charlie Parker story, but I struggled all the way through because of the narrating. Unfortunately, in my opinion, Paul Birchard doesn't do the books justice. And I must admit, I did get quite distracted throughout hearing Louis called 'Lewis'.

Tying up loose ends!

Really good to finally get some tying up of all the loose ends around Reverend Faulkner. I struggled with the narration to begin with. After having Jeff Harding do the first three in the series, I have the voices and names based on his performances and its really hard to hear a weaker narrator try and do it justice. However, this is a great story and really enjoyable.

Different narrator, but.....

I am torn as Parker is Harding to me. However, I preferred this narrator's interpretation for all the other characters. He made Louie more human and Angel vulnerable but smart. So I am conflicted but I feel this is one of my favourite Parker stories.

shame to change the narrator just for this book.

couldn't quite get into the book like I could tg e previous stories this is mainly down to changing the narrator, felt the original characters seemed conpletely different.

Slightly disappointed !

The overall story is a good crime fiction but I found the paranormal element a touch unbelievable and this reduced the grittiness of the storyline for me. I marked the narrator down although he was very good. He wasn't the same narrator as in the previous books in this series and his accent changed the dynamics of the characters. Also it took me a while to realise that Lewis (Louis)was the same person as Looey in the previous books.

Great story - wrong narrator

Another great story in the Charlie Parker series. Unfortunately it's slightly spoilt by the fact that they changed narrator - whilst he's decent, Jeff Harding had really established the voice of the characters and this guy falls short.

Worth persevering

Fantastic story as always. Initially struggled with the change in narrator. He seemed to be in a hurry to get to the end of the book which I found very off putting. As suggested by another reviewer I slowed down the narration to 0.90x which greatly improved the situation and I actually really enjoyed the rest of the book. I thought his characterization was really good, particularly of the female characters. My one criticism of Jeff Harding's performance is that he makes them sound simpering and weak.

Great story odd narrator choice

Im working my back through these books via audiobook so yes! Buy this book, Charlie is gritty and violent and the stories are always excellent. But for me, the narrator has made a gritty, grisled Private eye; sound like a 1930s New York guido and it really didn’t work for me, it actually put me off. His other characters are great but Charlie? Sorry but no. But please don’t let my review put you off because its an excellent thriller.

Marvelous Connolly

Another great book from John Connolly, I have read all the Charlie Parker books and now listening to them, disappointed by narrative by Paul Birchard but still a great listen, looking forward to the next
