Bangs on about how he is an established travel writer blah blah blah yet in this only book iv tried of his he is possibly the most boring

Not a good representation.

Not one of Mr Cahills best efforts I'm afraid. He can be very funny but I would advise you to try another one of his books first, ANY of his other books actually.
