Summary

Danger and violence have always been part of Sue Dalston's East End upbringing. Unloved by her mother, abused by her father, and brutalised throughout her entire marriage, she smashed her husband's skull in a final act of desperation. All that keeps her sane knows that she's done it to protect her four children. At last, they are safe from harm. When she is celled up with murderess Matilda Enderby, their fates become inextricably linked. And no one - least of all Sue - could have predicted the consequences...

Fabulous and totally gripping

Don’t normally leave reviews but this book was so wonderful I just had to! The story was great but made so much better by the narrator. Couldn’t wait to finish it but didn’t want it to end!

Tense and kept me guessing the whole way through

I could not stop listening to this book, I was obsessed with each and every chapter. So appalled by how the family lived, made me feel blessed that I don’t live that type of existence.

gripping, and so raw

such a brilliant writer, this novel was very hard to listen to at times, parts are so painful you are inhuman if you don't feel like crying for the characters. I don't actually like things that can affect you so negatively, at times it made you so angry and others woeful, but I still couldn't stop, I had to finish it, and I'm glad I did.
