Critic reviews

"Every mum's worst nightmare - Zoe is a brilliant character, and Samantha Hayes turns up the heat with Claudia's fears to such an extent that you can't help feeling the same terror she feels. Absolutely riveting, you won't want to put this one down!" ( Books Monthly)
"A tense thriller that will have you looking over your shoulder!" ( Candis)
"by far the best thriller I’ve read since Gone Girl… This is a genuine (and scary) page-turner about mothers and want-to-be-mothers who are not what they seem. There is a stunning plot twist - I couldn’t put it down." ( Read Make Cook)
"For any fans of Gone Girl, this startling novel is a must-read... a terse and thrilling read not to be missed" ( Psychologies)
"If you only take one book on holiday with you it has to be Until You’re Mine by Samantha Hayes. It’s a totally unputdownable thriller that will keep you gripped to your sun lounger until the very end. And just when you think you’ve figured things out, watch out for the twist!" ( Cosmopolitan.co.uk)
"I've always wanted a baby...it's been an ache deep in my soul for as long as I can remember, a sickness, a malignant desire..." Hooked yet? Give it a couple more pages and you will be. Hayes third novel is a classic cuckoo in the nest tale with a disturbing twist... This book is almost impossible to review without spoilers, so I won't. All I can say is, you won't see it coming." ( HarpersBazaar)

Rather tedious

Is there anything you would change about this book?

This audiobook started off pretty well and for the first half, despite the now rather tired psychological thriller setting, I was gripped. However it became rather tedious, farcical and unbelievable. At times it was well written but in places it was simple, cliche ridden chick lit. Also, I really did not like any of the characters and found it hard to summon up any interest in their lives.

Would you be willing to try another book from Samantha Hayes? Why or why not?

Possibly.

What about Clare Corbett’s performance did you like?

Clare Corbett is one of my favourite narrators and on the whole she narrates this well. However, the voice of Claudia really grated on me and the male voices were not quite convincing.

Do you think Until You're Mine needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes there could definitely be a follow up. I think Samantha Hayes has prepared us for this by introducing the detectives Lorraine and Adam and exploring their personal lives.

Standard issue thriller

Having really enjoyed The Reunion, I readily tried another by this author. Nowhere near the same standard, perhaps result of this being an earlier book. It’s not bad: interesting enough plot but very formulaic. There was no particular twist: or if there was, it was a bit obvious and telegraphed. The characters were not very deeply drawn; almost as though they needed another pass at them. Really pointless and uninteresting subplot about police officer’s home life with her unfaithful husband and brattish daughter which added nothing at all. Would rather the acreage had been used to work on the main plot and crank the sinister edge up a bit.

Narration was okay... Annoying Brummie accents I could have lived without and it teetered on the brink of “doing voice” a bit too often but I’ve heard worse.

Nice holiday listen (except if you're pregnant)

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes, but not the ones about to have a baby. It's for fans of books like Gone Girl.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I saw it coming early on and unfortunately think it would have been better to read because the voices gave away the twist before you're meant to know what's going on. I think this is the first time ever a thriller twist hasn't worked in audio.

What does Clare Corbett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I love how her voice rose and fell to indicate tension, confusion, etc.

Any additional comments?

It's a great holiday read but if you've read other books in this genre you'll figure out the twist early on. Still, I wanted to see how it played out and that was enjoyable enough.
