Summary

Sunday Times top 10 best seller by the author of Walking the Himalayas, winner of the 2016 Edward Stanford Adventure Travel Book of the Year award.

Walking the Americas chronicles Levison Wood's 1,800 mile trek along the spine of the Americas, through eight countries, from Mexico to Colombia, experiencing some of the world's most diverse, beautiful and unpredictable places.

His journey took him from violent and dangerous cities to ancient Mayan ruins lying still unexplored in the jungles of Mexico and Guatemala. He encountered members of indigenous tribes, migrants heading towards the US border and proud Nicaraguan revolutionaries on his travels, where at the end of it all, he attempted to cross one of the most impenetrable borders on earth: the Darien Gap route from Panama into South America. This trek required every ounce of Levison Wood's guile, tact, strength and resilience in one of the rawest, most real and most exciting journeys of his life.

Does not disappoint

If you've enjoyed Levison's Nile and Himalayan escapades, this latest travelogue will not disappoint. It is well written and carries with it a prose from someone who is not just passing through the land, but taking it in too.

Many will come to this audiobook after seeing the series on television and as with Lev's other two exploits, the audiobook of his travels in Central America will leave you with far more detail and insight into his journey, than was ever seen on screen.

Lev's ability through preparation and bloody-mindedness, often shows us that even in this world of internet, satellites and cheap, global travel, a long slog through the wilderness is not that much different to that experienced by the explorers of old.

In short, it just goes to show that it is still possible to launch an expedition through untamed places and when one does come across large, modern settlements, one can still experience a culture shock... in reverse.

Why didn’t the author narrate?

If I had realised Levison wasn’t the narrator I wouldn’t have purchased this. I enjoyed his narration on a previous book but this just loses son

Armchair travel at its worst

Before I say more I want to admit that yes I know that a travel book is by definition ajournal. That said this felt like a tamed down documentary to me. I like to actually feel like I'm there going through what they go through and doing what they do. This book didn't transport me to anywhere. it jsut bored me somewhat. That said there are some good points about it. There's history though nothing I didn't already know and the facts taht are fitted in aren't bad. However there are irrelevances. For instance what's the refurbishment of a house really got to do with it? As i say it felt like a bbc documentary on the subject. It's not for readers of the kind of book which really takes you there but if you just want dry dialogue which actually is stilted and feelskind ofjuvenile though I'm not sure if one might attribute that to its delivery or not well then this book is for you. I have another couple of books by this author because you sure can't call him a writer and i will read them but honestly I'm not looking forward to the experience which is a shame because I ahd high hopes for this one at the start.

Great story, wrong narrator

A story that is great to hear about and so awe inspiring.

The down point of this book is the narrator. You want it to be Levison telling the story but this narrators voice does grind in certain points and lets the story down.

However overall the story is exciting and a good one if you can get past the voice.

Walking the Americas

Amazing. Eye opening. Exciting.
When you can’t travel yourself to some of these wonderful , maybe dangerous places in our beautiful world Levison can take you there and expand your imagination and knowledge of both the places and the people he visits.

Real time adventure

Well read. Great attention to mind set, emotion and environment. Incredible achievement. Felt like I could imagine being on a majority of the journey.

Sorry!

Had to return this one... I love adventure books but was disappointed that the narrator didn't make much effort differentiating between characters. I'm pretty sure people in South America don't speak with a posh English accent.
