Summary
As the Second World War nears its end, a man is stabbed to death on the shoreline of Kinloch, in the shadow of the great warships in the harbour. Many years later the postman on Gairsay, a tiny island off the coast of Kintyre, discovers that the Bremner family are missing from their farm. There's a pot on the stove and food on the table, but of the Bremners there is no sign.
When DCI Daley comes into possession of a journal written by his wartime predecessor in Kinloch, Inspector William Urquhart, he soon realises that the Isle of Gairsay has many secrets. Assisted by his indomitable deputy, DS Brian Scott, and new boss, Chief Superintendent Carrie Symington, Daley must solve a wartime murder to uncover the shocking events of the past and the present.

Top notch
Thoroughly enjoyable tale from a master story teller. I'm not going to spoil it by précis, but it just shows how events from the past affect the future. As I tell my kids, secrets always have s way of bubbling to the surface.

Another excellent book in the series
I love this series from Denzil Meyrick. The stories are totally absorbing and I feel as if I know the characters personally. Once the book is started it is hard to stop listening! I look forward to following their journeys in future books.

Laugh out loud!!!
Fabulous, author brought Scotland and the village together with the local characters to life. I feel I know so much more of Scotland. Absolutely loved the dialogue, the one liners were really funny (made me laugh out loud). Thank you very much Denzil Meyrick.

Real hint of truth
This is a clever book constructed in to concurrent time zones for the plot at has a worrying element of underlying truth. Well presented and hold. Difficult to put down.

Another Gem
Denzil Meyrick has a brilliant way of combining mystery intrigue and down right hilarity in these DCI Daley tales. I found myself in fits of histerical laughter with tears rolling down my face (whilst trying to drive I might add!!) with some of Brian Scott's one liners and interactions with the locals especially with Glenhanety in her cottage!! Detective Sergeant Brian Scott is my hero.
The story begins with the mysterious dissapearance of a WW2 refugee German Jewish family who had settled on the island of Gairsay. It cleverly switches between the present day and the Period towards the end of the war .
All the characters have substance and are believable. A compelling story with twists and turns.
David Monteath's narration and different accents are as always brilliant. Roll on book 6. Thoroughly Recommended.

slightly confused...
I enjoyed this book for the most part. but I did find myself getting confused with the lack of separation between past and present story lines at times (earlier on in the book). I also got thoroughly lost towards the end. still certwinnive missed a vital chapter or something along those lines. ending was a bit abrupt and corny.

Vintage Daley
Just like a jigsaw puzzle. Lots of seemingly unrelated pieces but really satisfying trying to figure what goes where and really satisfying when it fits into place at the end.
