Dementia is an unmaking, a de-creation - an apocalypse of meaning. Since my father's slow-motion dying and his actual death in November 2014, I have been much preoccupied with dementia: by those who have it, by those who look after them, by the hospital wards whose beds are occupied by those in advanced stages of this self-loss, by the way society denies it, by the science of it, the art and literature about it, the philosophy, by what it means to be human, to have an identity. What is it to be oneself, and what is it to lose one's self?

Eleanor Lee is fiercely independent. She has lived alone well into her nineties, despite her now near-total blindness. Now, finally, she has been persuaded by her children to move into a home. She employs Peter, a recent graduate nursing a broken heart, to spend the summer sorting through her attic – papers, photographs, books and letters – ahead of the move.

When Jonny went missing everything changed. His mother's heart is full of terror and sadness instead of joy. His father's study overflows with newspaper cuttings and profiles on missing people instead of the academic texts that were there before. His sister, once carefree, now carries the weight of the world on her shoulders. His bedroom at home remains untouched and ready for his return. The hands on the clock continue to turn and yet Jonny hasn't returned. Where is he?

Ralph, Marnie and Oliver once knew each other as childhood friends. Now they meet again in Ralph's secluded cottage to share the precious days that Ralph has left.

Na een stukgelopen relatie in Italië woont Marnie weer in Londen, waar ze in een piepklein poppenmuseum werkt. Als ze op een ochtend onverwacht een telefoontje krijgt van Oliver, haar grote jeugdliefde, is dat het begin van Marnies terugkeer naar het verleden. Ralph, de gezamenlijke jeugdvriend van Marnie en Oliver, blijkt ernstig ziek. Om bij hem te kunnen zijn in deze zware periode, vertrekt Marnie naar Ralphs buitenhuis in Schotland. Hier komen de herinneringen aan haar jeugdjaren in alle hevigheid naar boven: Marnies gevoelens voor Oliver en Ralphs onbeantwoorde liefde voor Marnie.
